Researchers of the Geometric Modelling Laboratory at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Maribor (FERI) have developed an algorithm for the recognition of objects with the accuracy of more than 97%. In view of the results of the tests performed by the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the algorithm is the best in the world. Using the algorithm, they are able to recognise buildings, the terrain and even trees from the data generated by laser measuring devices. The algorithm is intended for the processing of data from laser measuring devices used in land surveying that can be installed in an airplane or helicopter and can capture images of the surface to an accuracy of just a few centimetres. The captured data only represents a set of unconnected points that need to be coherently connected in order to build useful 3D-models and recognise various elements such as ground, buildings, trees and the like in such models. Such algorithms allow the monitoring of the development of extensive geographical areas. We can determine what individual objects are, how many houses have been built, how the vegetation is developing, etc. We can also monitor changes, perform simulations of floods or control landslides. Knowing the laws that govern the shapes of objects opens up the doors to in-depth understanding and knowledge about hidden patterns and events on the Earth's surface.
